Topic > Jem Finch Character Analysis - 701
Jem's loss of innocence begins with Mrs. Dubouse's constant harassment of Scout and Jem when they pass her property. Scout recalls that when Jem got fed up with Mrs. Dubouse and took action, "... Jem grabbed my stick and ran flailing wildly up Mrs. Dubose's backyard steps... He didn't begin to calm down until he had cut the tops of every camellia bush owned by Mrs. Dubose…” (Lee 106). Jem’s actions completely contradict his past behavior and personality. Jem is level-headed and his actions are something that Scout would do, not him father from Mrs. Dubouse were Jem's first preview of what Maycomb was really like. The court trials had the most serious impact on Jem's loss of innocence during the Scout trial
