Topic > Characteristics of Individualism in Jamestown by John Rolfe

The Labor Law of 1661 stated that if a white indentured servant ran away with a black indentured servant and the white person was caught, then they would have to carry out both their contracts as well as the blacks' contract. By enforcing this law, he taught white people that if they interacted with a black person they would be punished. The Labor Law of 1662 stated that the race of the child born in Virginia would be determined by the race and status of the mother who was most likely black. These labor laws alienated Africans in a way that created a white versus black mentality, they were no longer united or had shared experiences, and this created a system where Europeans saw themselves as superior to black individuals, laying the foundation for the racism and racial discrimination.
