Harassment is unique in that there is digital hoarding, online harassment, outing, victim blaming, and trolling (masking). Each one is different from the other and yet in the end it still causes the same results. Digital hoarding occurs when an individual solicits involvement from others who may or may not know the person, while outing occurs when an individual publishes the victim's personal information such as phone number, address photo, etc. Victim blaming occurs when the victim(s) are taunted, shamed and insulted. Trolling (masquerading) is the action of the harasser who creates a fake profile used to send messages and/or photos to the victim. For example, an individual uses the image of another person and actively uses that image to "act" or "masquerade" as that person while chatting and messaging other people. It is also known to be called catfishing. Cyber harassment is probably the most serious type of harassment. The State Cyberstalking and Cyber Harassment Laws webpage states that “States have enacted “cyberstalking” or “cyber harassment” laws or have laws that explicitly include forms of electronic communication within more traditional stalking or cyberharassment laws. on harassment. This chart identifies state laws that include specific references to electronic communication. Cyber harassment is serious enough to require, as already mentioned, laws to prevent and stop people from harassing and stalking others online.
