In today's education system, there are many factors that determine how our children receive their education. Starting from the time children are enrolled in daycare and kindergarten, how they learn or are taught can influence their outcome when they get to elementary and high school. With too many students, it may be difficult and overwhelming for the teacher and at some point the class may get out of control. As a current instructor in the US Army, I see many class sizes coming into the school, from 28 up to 48 students per class. The size of a class influences learning outcomes through a variety of distractions a student may have, the teacher's personalized attention to the student, and the learning styles a teacher uses to ensure the student achieves a learning outcome higher. In the classroom there are those students who don't want to listen, those who want all the attention for themselves or who are simply causing some kind of disorder. Distractions can come in many types and forms: talking, moving, doodling, or even throwing a piece of paper at another student. These types of distractions are what cause students to not want to listen to the teacher and not be able to learn to the best of their ability. When students are engaged in a conversation of their own, the rest of the students tend to listen to that specific conversation and not the topic being discussed in class. Whatever some students do, it's a classroom distraction that the rest of the class doesn't need. With smaller classes, there are much fewer distractions and with fewer students, the teacher can focus more on learning. With a smaller class, students focus more on the topic. It's... a half-sheet... the teacher teaches in a more traditional style, such as taking notes and handing out worksheets, the result may not be as effective. As an instructor, I have noticed that there are many factors that influence how a student learns in school. Class size has a huge impact on students and many students are simply ignored without knowing the topic they have learned and honestly, this will affect them greatly in their future. Not only will they have to work harder to achieve their goals, but they will also question whether they have the ability to pursue a higher education.
