As Benjamin Franklin once said, "Many people die at 25 and aren't buried until 75." Guido Orefice, the protagonist of La Vita é Bella, was not one of those people. In the film, Guido is a man who lives every second, taking nothing for granted and not letting any opportunity go to waste. In La Vita é Bella, the main character Guido Orefice travels to Arezzo, Italy, with his friend Ferruccio, in the hope of finally opening a bookshop. During the journey to the city, Guido meets a teacher named Dora, immediately falling in love with her. During his stay in the city, Guido meets Dora several times, some by mistake, others on purpose, and never misses an opportunity to impress and woo her. Finally, after freeing her from her engagement party with another man, Guido marries Dora. The birth of their son Joshua and five years pass. World War II begins and the Germans deport many Jews to concentration camps. On the night of Joshua's fifth birthday, German soldiers come and take Guido, his uncle, and Joshua to a concentration camp. When Dora finds out what became of her husband and son, she chases them, eventually ending up in the same camp as them. While Joshua and Guido are on their way to the camp and even when they arrive, Guido makes Joshua believe that the whole ordeal is a game, the grand prize being a real tank. The story ends when the Allies capture the camp, sadly after Guido is executed for attempting to escape. Joshua is taken away from the field in one of the American tanks, Joshua thinks it is because he won the match, and on the way he sees his mother, from whom he has been separated since the night of his birthday, which is a bittersweet ending. . Life is Beautiful is a masterful production, after all... middle of paper... the screenplay would just be an unrealized potential and, in the end, a waste. The script and the film are vital to each other, each fulfilling the other in ways that neither could alone. The screenplay provides the vital information needed for the film to become a success. The film, thanks to the effectiveness of the script, conveys the theme of courage through the use of character development, dialogue and effects within the film. Courage is well shown in the characters of Guido and Dora. Can anyone really know if he would have the courage to carry on, despite great difficulties, even when his loved ones were at stake?
