Dr. Jack Kevorkian has helped more than one hundred people voluntarily end their lives. He was tried and convicted of second degree murder despite the fact that all of his patients voluntarily participated and asked him for help in ending their lives ("Jack Kevorkian"). What led to his death was that in one of his cases, unlike his previous patients, he actively participated in the patient's death with a lethal injection ("Jack Kevorkian"). The man was too weak to do it himself and was filmed, which was used as evidence in the case against him. Dr. Jack Kevorkian has helped multitudes of competent terminally ill patients end their suffering and pain (“Jack Kevorkian”). Usually in cases of assisted suicide the doctor prescribes a lethal dose of a prescription, but the patient must administer the drug himself, without the help of anyone else, including the doctor. This prescription is ordered only after the patient has declared, at two different times on two different occasions, within fourteen days of each other and sometimes with written consent, that he agrees with the decision to end to your life with the help of your doctor through a lethal dose of a prescription drug. The Court held that “assisted suicide” is not a freedom defined or granted in the Constitution (Washington). In previous cases, courts have held that unless a fundamental right is “deeply rooted in the nation's history,” it cannot be considered a freedom (Washington). The Constitution provides no protection for the right to life or the right to die, so it is up to states to decide whether to allow assisted suicide. Currently three states have legalized assisted suicide: Oregon, Vermont and Washington (“Euthanasia”). Montana has almost half the paper...not my time in a hospice unit in a hospital. As I sat in my grandmother's room I could hear people moaning and I could see people lying in drug-induced comas. I thought to myself what kind of life is this. I understand that the nation's history has long prohibited and avoided suicide, but in my opinion this is different. This is a more dignified death, which is about personal autonomy. I understand the fears of various states regarding the legalization of assisted suicide. However, other countries and some states have legalized it. It has not caused mass assisted suicides and I believe it could be done in such a way as not to compromise doctor patient trust. I'm not saying I condone assisted suicide for everyone, but it needs to be an option for people. I think if abortion is an option, then assisted suicide should be too.
