Negative reviews of a company come from customers all the time. This can also mean a negative effect for businesses. Back then, companies were able to control the information available about them simply by filing a complaint. Now companies are more like observers who often do not have the right to take action against all negative reviews (Andreas). Social media has a platform to interact with so many people with a single piece of information. “These interactions, such as reposts, likes, and comments, are what drive the success of social media, but they also backfire… if the comments are negative or off-topic,” (Mercer). Information that the company does not want to go viral can spread fast enough to reach customers. Negative reviews and comments about a company can jeopardize a small business. Even personal data on social networks is not always safe. Even though the settings provide high privacy security, researchers can look at anyone's friends list and find ways to learn more about what a person likes (Frazier). Researchers have also stated that social networking applications can lead to depression, sleep disorders, and poor academic performance (Frazier). The way a person uses social networks can cause these symptoms. Some say it brings people together through the Internet and others say it sometimes creates isolation (Frazier). Social media therefore has a powerful amplifying effect that can be used for better or worse
