Topic > Get out of my way, grandma! - 692

I'm sure everyone, at some point in their lives, has found themselves in a vehicle behind or next to an elderly person. People call slow drivers grandma, grandpa, dad, etc. when you're sarcastic. In reality, not all seniors drive slowly, but many do. Not all seniors drive carelessly, but many do. Not all older adults drive dangerously, but many do. Not all senior drivers need their driving assessed, but many do. So why don't seniors have to take a mandatory driving test every year? Most deny the risk involved while driving; that's the scary part. With increasing population, accident and death statistics, elderly drivers pose a real threat to the safety of themselves and civil society; Luckily, there are signs to look out for when a senior needs to get out of the driver's seat and places and ways to help them deal with the situation. Every year we collect myriad statistics on almost everything, including older drivers, and when it comes to older drivers, the results are terrifying. The percentage of older drivers is expected to nearly double by 2030. Today, the percentage of drivers age 65 and older is 16; in 2030 it is expected to be 25% (Kluger 1). No one wants to think that grandma might have an accident, but it happens. The chance of a shipwreck increases at age 65 and thereafter (Neighmond 1). Older adults are more likely to die from accidents than any other age group (Olson 3). Older drivers don't just pose a risk to themselves, they're a risk to the people around them. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), drivers age 70 and older represent approximately 9 percent of the U.S. population. However, these older drivers, who drive in the middle of the paper, find the safety of the general public. Works Cited Brown, Lauren Hinson.
