He then divides his text into three parts defined by three generations of slavery in North America: Part One: Charter Generations, Part Two: Plantation Generations, and Part Three: Generations revolutionary. Each of these parts begins with an introduction and is then followed by four chapters representing the four different slave regions: the North, the Chesapeake region, the South Carolina Coastal Plain, Georgia and Florida, and the lower Mississippi Valley. Following the three parts is an epilogue that further discusses the changing definitions of race, African American churches, and whites' perceptions of blacks. Berlin concludes his text with a section consisting of various information tables, abbreviations, and a long note
