Throughout William Shakespeare's Hamlet, themes are very important ingredients for the entire play. The most important and important theme is revenge. Some critics of Shakespeare might argue that guilt is the most important theme. However revenge is the most important theme and the reader sees this through the revenge which moves the plot forward, the idea of seeking revenge allows the reader to learn more about the characters, foreshadowing the characters death and ultimately seeking revenge causes the deaths of most of the main characters. Some critics of Shakespeare may argue that guilt is the most important theme in the play Hamlet. They may believe this because of the way guilt advances the plot throughout the play. To demonstrate this critics can use “While to my shame I see / The imminent death of twenty, a thousand men [...] Oh, from now on, / Let my thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worse” (4.4 .59-65). Through Hamlet's soliloquy the reader is able to feel the true guilt that Hamlet is feeling. Thousands of people can fight for their country even in the face of death, while Hamlet cannot even kill his father's murderer. Hamlet decides in the soliloquy that it is time to fight and stop feeling the guilt, which he feels throughout the play. However, even by looking at this quote the reader will find that in the end Hamlet decides that revenge is what he must seek and therefore showing it is the most important theme. To prove that revenge is the most important theme in which the plot advances, it is when Hamlet says, "Let me know that I, with swift wings / Like meditation or thoughts of love, / Can sweep away my vengeance." " (1.5.29-31). Hamlet is now stating that he wants to know all knowledge so that he can quickly seek revenge for his father, faster at...... middle of paper ...... next in thy eternal cell, / That thou so many princes at once / So bloodily smote?”(5.2.357-359) Several characters including Claudius, Hamlet, and Laertes are trying to avenge someone or seek vengeance they all end up meeting their fate and die as well as the other characters. Fortinbras knows that he arrives too late and is unable to help the kingdom, however he is now the current king, throughout Hamlet the idea of revenge is very prominent and important. Critics might say that guilt is the most important theme because of how it helps move along the show. However, revenge also moves the show and does so from beginning to end Furthermore, the theme of revenge allows the reader to learn more about the character's development, foreshadowing his death and is ultimately the main reason for the death of most of the main characters...
