Topic > Julian Assange and WikiLeaks - 1306

WikiLeaks is more than just a website. It is one of the fastest-growing nonprofit news organizations of the twenty-first century. With millions of documents published, WikiLeaks recently published over 250,000 documents related to US embassy message trafficking; most of which are NOFORN (no foreign nationals) secrets or classified. The disclosure of these documents has seriously hampered diplomatic relations between various countries, of which the United States is the main target. In these various “cables,” as they are commonly called, the inside thoughts and opinions of several high-ranking United States officials are laid bare for anyone with access to the Internet to observe. Many argue that this is an extreme exercise in free speech; simply by keeping the lines of communication open between our government and its people. This is a fair facade of the truth. The reality is this: WikiLeaks is harmful. It is detrimental to our country's ability to present a clear and consistent diplomatic embrace to our friends and allies. The people releasing the material do not appear to share the same statement about the consequences of their actions. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says: “Since 2006, we've been working under this philosophy that abusive organizations need to be in the public eye. If their behavior is revealed to the public, they have two choices: one is to reform themselves so that they can be proud of their efforts and proud to show them to the public. Or the other is to block internally and balkanize, and consequently, obviously, cease to be as efficient as before.” (TIME) Sounds good in theory, but the context needs to be set correctly for this topic in... middle of the document... for this.
