Russian social society as a whole is very different from that of other countries surrounding it. Russia is physically the largest country in the world, and because the population is so spread out, social norms vary from place to place. Furthermore, there are social characteristics evident in cities that are drastically different from those seen in small villages scattered across much of Russia's rural countryside. Family structure and the role of women are different in urban areas compared to rural ones. Expectations and responsibilities vary, so to study the Russian family and gender roles it is necessary to find the similarities between rural and urban ways and also find the aspects that make them different. The same concept must also be used to consider popular recreational activities in this great country. Women's roles and rights have changed dramatically throughout history in Russia. In early Russian history, women were subject to men and had the typical role of wife and mother with domestic and mothering duties. The husband was in control of everything and everything the wife owned was actually considered the husband's property. However, in the eighteenth century the Single Inheritance Act of 1714 was passed which allowed women to sell their property without their husband's consent if they wished. There was much debate about this law, but it remained valid and opened the door for women to gradually gain more rights and equality in society (Marrese 383). During World War II, most Russian men went to fight, leaving women in charge of the home and jobs that men left behind. This gave women much more freedom and voice in society. During the time of the Soviet Union and now in today's Russia... middle of paper... even at the 2014 Olympics. Bandy is becoming very popular among many nations, Russia being one of the highest. Outdoor recreation is also very popular in Russian culture. People enjoy biking, fishing and hiking. People also enjoy kayaking and canoeing when the weather is not so cold. During the long winter season people love to ski and ice skate. Many of these activities are enjoyed by people with family and friends. Russia is also home to numerous national parks that people can enjoy. They can do some of the activities they love, such as hiking and fishing, and they can also get away from the crowded, noisy city and enjoy the outdoors (May). Many Russians, especially those from cities, take advantage of these beautiful places to spend time with their families and friends, which is vital to Russian culture and lifestyle..
