Disney Princess Pictures: Housework, Mirrors and ChameleonsAt the beginning of Walt Disney Pictures' Tangled, a title card cataloging the film as Walt Disney Animation's fiftieth animated movement Study The image appeared. The studio's first animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was introduced to audiences in 1937. In this span of 73 years and 50 films, how has Disney animated film changed, or even changed at all? Both features follow the story of their respective heroines, Snow White in Snow White and Rapunzel in Tangled. Snow White as Disney's first princess is simple. Her high-pitched voice conveys a feeling of innocence and naivety. Featuring its opening song, "I'm Wishing", Snow White fetches water from a well while singing to her reflection. 73 years later, the princess has matured. Rapunzel, while encompassing the traditional traits of a Disney princess, has a certain edge. She is an adventurous seventeen-year-old, curious about the world outside her tower. Compared to Snow White's “I'm Wishing,” Rapunzel's opening song, “When will my Life Begin,” clearly demonstrates the maturity and complexity that Disney's protagonist now possesses in a new century. From Snow White to Cinderella to Sleeping Beauty, early Disney princesses from the 1930s to 1950s all focused heavily on cleaning and completing household chores. For example, in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Snow White's main job and the reason why she can stay in the Seven Dwarfs' cottage is that she will constantly cook and clean for the little men. In Tangled, however, the opening lines of the film throw this stereotypical Princess grooming scheme into the trash. Rapunzel begins her song, “When will m...... middle of paper...... purposes, both films hit different tones for death and marketability. The technologies available at the time of creation also influence how the image appears and is depicted, but not necessarily how the story is told. This right balance and blend of accepted traditions and derivatives of the princess archetype, use of technology and attention to the audience creates a perfect potion, making Disney Animated Studios a jugunate in children's animation for years to come.
