Background InformationThe Toronto Transportation Commission was established in 1920, however, it was not renamed the Toronto Transit Commission until January 1, 1954. Toronto's first subway, which also began in 1954; The Union to Eglinton section of what is now the Yonge Line was built with war proceeds when gas caps limited automobile use. Additionally, in that year, the TTC became the sole provider of public transportation in metro Toronto. However, the Toronto Transit Commission has come a long way, as the total number of passengers in 2008 was 466.7 million. Additionally, in 2009, 2,487,000 fares (including transfers) were collected on an average business day. The people most involved in this issue are Mayor David Miller, Premier Dalton McGuinty and Metrolinx, the transportation company that will soon build the city's 5 new Transit Lines. This is a very important issue for Mayor David Miller, and the delay in funding for Toronto's public transit goes against the mayor's ambitious legacy on public transit. This issue became a concern when Premier Dalton McGuinty withdrew transit funding after previously announcing it. As a result, the expansions and light rail will not be ready for the 2015 Pan American Games as rumored. Why is this a problem Public transportation is a very important part of Toronto as a city as many people take public transportation to go to work, school, social events or other places.
