There are a number of significant challenges facing today's Army: the Global War on Terror, or what has recently been called the "Long War"; acquisitions of weapons systems and personnel reductions. The focus of this article is on a strategic component of the military mission: leadership. More specifically, it will focus on servant leadership and its impact on the military vision. This article first explores the meaning of leadership change, followed by an examination of three notable characteristics of servant leadership and their historical influence through the eyes of a famous leader. Whether you study Sun Tzu's “The Art of War,” Martin Luther King Jr.'s extraordinary passion for equality, or even the coaching genius of Vince Lombardi, you can easily find models of inspiring leadership and strategies for success. Inspirational leadership conveyed through motivational speakers increases the passion of its audience because it taps into emotions. So, what is it that attracts people to a leader? Is it charisma, passion, kindness or correctness? Is it the ability to craft a vision that the entire organization can understand and support? Next, this paper will examine servant leadership and how it compares to the terms leadership and management. All members of the armed forces take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. Whether they knew it or not, by taking that oath they accepted the responsibility to lead our subordinates. Speaking from experience, I have worked for many highly skilled managers in my 24 years in the Navy, but only a few life-changing, organization-transforming leaders.
