According to the Cambridge dictionary, the concept of “cancel culture” is seen as a person who behaves in a group by neglecting or showing lack of support how the person has done something that may upset or displease a group in this case through social media to the public on the social media platform. Get an Original Essay Over the years cancel culture has become progressively more toxic allowing people online to destroy people's careers with the click of a button. Due to its toxicity, I don't agree with cancel culture to some extent as people could be canceled due to false accusations made by the public on social media. While cancel culture has many negative aspects, one positive aspect that has been brought to the public's attention is that it is a way to hold people accountable for their actions and create awareness about more serious topics such as sexual assault, abuse, racism and so on. This prevents the rich, rich and famous from walking away from their problems just because of who they are and not what they have done. On May 25, 2020, cancel culture brought justice to a black man named George Floyd. He was accused of using counterfeit money in a shop. During this arrest a white police officer named Derrick Chauvin. Chauvin proceeded to handcuff and restrain Floyd, holding him down by pressing his knee into Floyd's neck. These actions taken by Chauvin caused a horrific event that will forever be remembered in history as a white male officer forcefully and knowingly choking a black man as he screamed “I can't breathe.” as this event unfolded, civilian bystanders recorded the event and uploaded it to social media platforms. The scary video went viral and the public demanded justice. Due to the overwhelming response to the video, the Minneapolis Police Department immediately fired Chauvin and the 3 other police officers present during the incident. Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. For this reason, this specific example of cancel culture has helped highlight the serious problem of the oppression of black lives in the American criminal justice sector. Johnny Depp, a famous musician, actor and producer, was wrongly accused of verbally, physically and sexually abusing his ex-wife. Amber heard. Heard used social media platforms to post and create false allegations that her ex-husband Jonny Depp was verbally, sexually and physically abusing her. the content she posted to the public was false images purporting that she had been assaulted by him, including messages, voice notes, and images of herself mimicking being physically assaulted. These false accusations lead Depp to be fired from Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean series and the Warner Brothers film series, Fantastic Beasts. Depp's entire career was destroyed and stopped. Depp then filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife seeking $50 million in damages for the loss of his career. He also filed a defamation of character lawsuit where he was proven innocent. This example of cancel culture proves my point that it can defame someone's career by negatively impacting their livelihood. Please note: this is just an example. Get a document now..
