“Tabula Rasa” is a ballet performance performed by the dance ensemble here at Snow College. Tabula Rasa performed a number of different dances entitled Skewed, Mother, More Than Words, Solitaria, Remember Home, “Some foreign word”, Interpersonal and 16 months. I really enjoyed a lot of these dances, but some of the main things that stood out to me were the lighting changes, how each dance told a different story, and the precision/timing of the dance. I believe in it because it creates the atmosphere and really makes the audience feel what the dancers are trying to make you feel. For example, in the dance “More than Words” about the person changing currency, you notice how the lighting changed when the mood was light and happy, but then when she felt lonely, the lighting changed to a darker tone. Music also tells a lot with lighting. This happens because when the music changes, the lighting changes depending on the mood we should be feeling. When the mood is happy, you notice colors like yellow, bright blue and just plain bright colors! With the sad and angry music you get more of a red, or a black with just a spotlight, like in the first dance “Skewed” about the different worlds. I loved how each dance was different and told different stories. I liked it because it showed different types of dance, and at some points I really felt like I was feeling what the dancers wanted me to feel, because I understood the story and felt like I knew exactly what was happening. My favorite dance that I enjoyed was the story called “16 Months” because “The purpose of this piece is to expand and recreate “16 Months” a choreographic work influenced by the process of falling and recovering experienced by drug-addicted individuals (Handout of the ballet program) ”. I really liked this piece because the atmosphere was so intense and it really captured me. Grabbing me means I've been sucked into this dance the whole time. Drug addiction is a big thing, and some people don't take it seriously, or even realize what others go through to recover. Most of the lighting was red because it's a cruel time for people who are recovering. The ending of that performance was powerful because the girl goes on top of the girl on the floor ready to attack her with drugs (I think) and the girl on the floor grabs her wrist to stop it. It was so powerful for me and I could have watched more if there was more to that story! The last thing I noticed about this ballet was the timing and synchronization of the dancers. For the most part they were all in sync. But there were many times where the girls were all out, or out a couple of times and it was noticeable. I also noticed how some girls tried to do a move, but you could tell they weren't flexible enough to make it look cute. I'm not a professional critic, but these were just very visible to me. All the stories were amazing, as was the use of lighting, all the unique stories behind each dance, and the accuracy and timing of the dancers. I would definitely come to another ballet show. Now I can't watch a ballet the same way without looking for all these little things!
