I chose to watch the documentary The Hunting Ground, a film that focuses on the shocking rates of sexual assault on college campuses. I chose to watch this movie because I was writing my problem analysis paper on this very problem and I knew that this movie would help give me in-depth insight into the problem before starting my paper. The Hunting Ground is a beautiful and heartbreaking film that follows the stories of many young men and women through their stories of sexual violence that occurred while they were enrolled in college or university. The documentary begins with a collage of videos of high school girls opening their college acceptance letters. The purpose of this was to show that the excitement of getting into your dream school could be tainted during your first year, or the remaining 3, by rape and sexual assault. As the documentary continues, it delves into how colleges are not responding effectively to the assaults that are occurring on their own campuses. It shares the stories of many courageous women, who fought against their schools and their delinquents to get the justice they deserved. It focuses specifically on the case of Annie E. Clark and Andrea Pino, who were raped at the University of North Carolina-Chapel. The University did not handle the situation accurately and effectively and offered no help or support to the young women, who then filed a Title IX claim against the University. Their claim went forward, they took it to court and won. They were portrayed as two women who started out as women who wanted justice, to change agents who have had a huge impact in raising awareness of sexual assault on college campuses through this documentary. The Hunting Ground shows case after case of universities failing to respond accurately to reports of sexual assault by women, and shows how the administration is turning its back when it comes to sexual assault on their campuses because of funding and reputation. Universities don't want to lose money by focusing on sexual assault and don't wait for their reputations to be tarnished by statistics. Say no to plagiarism. Women everywhere are oppressed by their perpetrators and silenced due to stigma. There are 5 faces of oppression and many of them are seen in the context of the issue of sexual violence. Sexual assault survivors are exploited by perpetrators who exploit a woman's body for their own sexual gain. Survivors are marginalized and placed on the fringes of society due to the stigma surrounding sexual violence. Rapists crave power and control, and this film highlighted how they get away with these crimes because survivors feel as if they are pushed to the margins of society. This goes hand in hand with stigma. Being oppressed and sidelined, survivors may find it difficult to stand up and speak out for fear of being rejected, laughed at, or disbelieved. Furthermore, survivors are made to feel helpless towards their abuser by being forced to do something they did not consent to in the first place. Finally, violence is an important part of sexual violence. THE.
