Topic > The Spanish-American War and its long-term effects on us

Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the “World” newspaper was the main competitor of Will Randolph Hearst, publisher of the “Journal” newspaper. This struggle to be the best would later begin the issues that led to the Spanish-American War. Yellow Kid comics were first sold to Pulitzer, which was New York's leading newspaper at the time. Hearst wanted the yellow guy comics, so he paid writer RF Outcalt more money than Pultizer paid him. Pultizer then hired another writer to make his version of the Yellow Kid comics, making the papers known as the "Yellow Papers". The main problem was that each of the readers wanted the largest audience. They would delay anything that exaggerated reports about other countries. Spain controlled Cuba in a very violent and brutal way and the way the Cubans were pushed back would come up a lot in the news. Say no to plagiarism. Cuba later became the world's largest sugar producer. A large Cuban independence movement was trying to oppose the harsh rule of Spain. In 1868, the rebel group was formed consisting of poor whites, slaves and free blacks. The rebellion returned in 1895, led by Jose Marti, a Cuban journalist and poet statesman. He lived in the United States from 1881 to 1895 and all the time encouraged his people to fight for freedom. He returned to Cuba in 1895 to be killed in his protest against the Spanish. The Cubans launched surprise attacks on Spain before retreating in 1896. Spain, appointing a new commander Valeriano Weyler, forced thousands of Cubans into reconcentration camps where many died of disease and starvation. Many American investors were worried about their lands and shares in Cuba, but even after the calls for help, President Grover Cleveland remained natural, even though it was difficult with all the calls for help. Many Americans heard from newspapers which were the only media back then and that is why Pulitzer and Hearst fought for popularity. The “Splendid Little War,” a Spanish-American conflict won by the United States, was known for bringing forth magnificent intelligence and spirit. On May 1, Dewey's squadron raided Manila Bay and opened fire; it was then that the fighting began. Dewey claimed victory with few casualties. Subsequently, fighting resumed in Cuba, where the United States achieved another victory. The war began to move quickly following that fighting. After Spain's attempt to leave Santiago, the U.S. Navy destroyed the squadron and shortly thereafter captured Puerto Rico. Therefore, this war originated from the conflict in Cuba and ended with numerous victories for the United States, although we suffered some casualties. The Spanish-American War ended on August 12, 1898, following the signing of the Treaty of Paris. This meant that Spain would agree to grant independence to Cuba, to cede Puerto Rico and the Pacific island of Guam to the United States, and also to cede the Philippines in exchange for 20 million dollars from the United States, thus making the United States a colonial empire holding Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Since this treaty had to be discussed, some people supported it and some didn't. This debate lasted a month and the result was that the supporters won 57 to 27. The treaty was then ratified on February 6, 1899. After all this, Cuba still posed a problem for the United States. We have been in Cuba for 4 years since.
