Although Islamophobia is thought to have affected people after 9/11, the term was coined in the 1980s. There are four types of Islamophobia. The first is discrimination against Muslims because of their beliefs and values. The second is called Islamophobia post-reflexive personal discrimination, when people believe that the ideals of Islam are inferior to those of the West. Third, institutional Islamophobia occurs when, in social situations, people intentionally ignore the beliefs of Islamic and/or Muslim people.
