Topic > What is a woman expected to be like in today's society and advertising?

What is your definition of “Super Woman”? Over the past two decades, women have been built to conform to what society wants them to be. Starting from the workplace with cute clothes and subtle makeup, to the home with cooking, cleaning and making sure dinner is ready and on the table. In the “Bed, Bath and Beyond” advertisement, the image depicts what a woman is expected to be like in today's society; being able to multitask in unique situations and be in more than one place at a time. This advertisement invites viewers to perceive women as objects with the sole purpose of pleasing others. Say no to plagiarism. While multitasking can be a symbol of power and independence, I feel that aside from this ad, there are many other ways women can be portrayed. That there is much more to a woman than just cooking and cleaning. Over the last century or so, female conformity has not only changed expectations, but given women a sense of independence. While it may be easy for women to conform and be the ideal version of a perfect housewife, this is no longer the case. “Conformity is the act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to group norms. Norms are implicit, unspoken rules shared by a group of individuals that guide their interactions with others. ... For example, people tend to follow social norms when eating or watching television, even when they are alone” (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/conformity). Or in other words, behave in accordance with society's demands. I think one of the main things this ad shows is that women are good at multitasking. Additionally, this ad shows a woman happily doing more than one thing at a time. It shows her throwing things away, preparing dinner, ironing, washing her hands, etc. On the other hand, the advertisement shows a woman who is clearly not tired and capable of doing more than one thing at the same time. I think it demonstrates the idea that a woman should be a “superhuman” being and not get tired. It shows that she has a good attitude and is happy with the tasks she has been given. Therefore, the advertisement implies that multitasking is not a bad thing, but is a skill that women are expected to have. The advertisement not only shows a woman doing many things, but it is the message behind the image that is important. The message behind the advert is that women are okay with conforming to what society wants them to be; that of a housewife. That it's okay to do whatever man doesn't want to do. Don't misunderstand women, we appreciate men who work and provide for us, but have they ever thought about the woman's point of view? That maybe they don't just want to be trophy wives/housewives? That maybe they would like to get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air while they can before Donald Trump kills us all emotionally? While it may be attractive to some women to be able to do many tasks at once, some women may feel that there is more to life than cooking and cleaning. There are many other ways to show that women can have many talents. I think this ad, like many others, shows a false reality where women are expected to be a certain way and do certain things. Some may think that this advertisement objectifies women in the sense that their entire existence is focused on them doing household chores. On the other hand, some might.
