Topic > A film analysis of The Shallows, a thriller film by Jaume Collet-serra

“The Shallows” is a thriller film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. The film was first released on June 21, 2016. The film is a thriller and reflects the real difficulties one can face in life. Nancy, the protagonist, is trapped 200 meters from the shore and without hope as she is sure that the whale will kill her or starvation would definitely make her weak and she will eventually die. This demonstrates timeless human values; such a scenario may occur now or in the future (Debruge, 2016). Furthermore, the film is classic as it has memorable scenes. The protagonist is going through a difficult time because she lost her surfboard, injured her leg and got trapped in a rock after the whale discovered her presence in the water. The film is also considered a classic as the main character showed a great performance when she swam despite her leg injury and managed to escape the whale. The technical features of this film include shooting action underwater and shooting at high speed in the presence of water waves (Hoffman, 2017). Say no to plagiarism. After his mother died of cancer, he went to a beach in Mexico. He had just dropped out of medical school. The beach he visited is the one where his mother had once been when she was pregnant with Nancy. When she arrived at the beach, she met three men who were surfing with her. During a break, he video chats with his sister and father. While surfing for the last time, he sees the floating carcass of a whale. She rides towards it, and that's where a shark knocked her off her surfboard and bit her leg. She took refuge on the carcass and the shark followed her. Finally he settled on a rock and slept there for the night with a wounded seagull. The following day, her friends, who had been surfing with her the day before, arrived and before she could warn them, they were killed by the shark. He later swam from the rock to a buoy where he took a flare gun. He wanted to alert a distant load, but no one could see his signal. Subsequently, the shark attacked the buoy and is dragged down by the buoy's chains to the ocean floor. While chasing it, the shark impaled itself on the back of the buoy's anchor and died. She was later found by a boy, Carlos, floating near the shore and was rescued. The film then shifts to the present, when Nancy is again at the beach with her sister and father (Metacritic.com, 2017). The shooting technique used to shoot this film involves the use of aerial cameras. The sounds were also live, as you can hear the sound of the water waves and the characters gasping while surfing. The film is a good type of art and well presented. The value points of this film lie in its themes. One theme is resilience; Nancy was resilient even though she was having a hard time being trapped in the water. So from the film we learn to be tenacious. This film resembles a literary work as it has a lively performance that resembles a real event without much exaggeration. The film received positive responses with a higher percentage of people liking the film. Watching this film I had a Dionysian aesthetic experience. I would recommend this movie to other people as it is a type of movie that provokes thoughts and feelings as Nancy's story unfolds while she is trapped in the water (IMDb.com, 2017).
