Topic > An Argument Against the Legalization of Abortion and the Roe V. Wade Case

Before I was assigned this debate topic I was unsure of my position on the abortion issue. I thought I knew the facts, and just as recently as Wednesday of this week, I was leaning more towards the pro-choice side. I knew this conflicted with my principles, morals and religion, but I thought it might be good for women to do this. I thought maybe there were times when everything could be okay. But, after studying this topic, I changed my mind. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Get an original essay I wanted to attack abortion from a point of view other than religious. Religious people who use religiously based arguments that are difficult to counter attack abortion easily. But as we've seen, religious arguments rarely hold up in court. Jews, Methodists, Catholics, Baptists, and the Church of Christ all teach against it, but I wanted to reject abortion on the basis of something other than religion. I don't want to be attacked by an atheist view of abortion, so I've chosen to almost completely exclude the Bible from this topic (I mentioned two sentences about it in class). On the limited research I have done, I have discovered some scary figures. There have been approximately 40 million abortions since Roe v. Wade until January 22, 1973. That's about the population of Canada, actually a little more. And there are no signs of slowing down. In my mind that's 40 million lives taken. Another thing that helped change my mind were the descriptions of different abortion procedures that I shared in some way in class. I think every abortion doctor should seek therapy, because there is no way they are mentally healthy to be able to do these things to an unborn child. I hope I never decay morally enough to resort to these things to make money; I think I'd rather go hungry. People say that the fetus doesn't feel pain, but research shows that this is the case. Experiments have shown that the fetus reacts to different types of stimulation, transmitting sensations of pleasure and pain. Last time I checked, it was a crime against humanity to hurt a defenseless person. Who says the fetus is not a person? More importantly, if the fetus is not a person, what makes it a person? The answer to this question is a slippery slope, where the wrong answer could lead to complete disaster. There are alternatives to abortion, and there should be more. I think the government should step in and take charge of the current programs so that people don't try to take advantage of people who are in desperate situations and who take advice from unqualified people. There should be more counseling centres, legal aid, antenatal care, postnatal care, financial support and, perhaps most importantly, advice on how a woman can continue her education. Even though I don't know what it means to be raped or accidentally conceive a child, I still think that every child could become an integral part of society. Who knows what each of those 40 million would have done, one of them might have found the cure for cancer, or come to UTM and take one of our courses. But they were also denied the chance to be born, and that is absolutely disgusting
