Since time immemorial, social injustices have been prevalent that forced our ancestors into activism. Fast forward to the present day, social injustices are still persistent and continue to undermine our societies. Social conflicts can take many forms. At the same time it is interesting how these injustices are anchored in the aspect of Power and supremacy. As a matter of fact, in every conflict, there must be power involved against the will of minorities within society. It is important to recognize the two types of protests namely; Violent and non-violent protests. For the purposes of this article, the reflection will be based on non-violent forms of protest. As stated earlier, racism is one of the social conflicts that result in various conflicts in America. This is where one race feels more superior than the other, which results in more favors being given to one race while the other race is oppressed. Racism is one of the worst vices that exist today (Woodward). This vice can manifest itself through insults, arguments, arguments and upsets. The persistence of these manifestations can cause colossal damage as it can lead to clashes between two or more races. However, in a civilized society, nonviolence is a better way to channel conflict and drive an agenda than the use of violence. . In most cases, both violent and nonviolent protests achieve the same results, but the level of damage caused to violent protesters can be irreversible and very costly. Violence could also lead to deaths and tension within society (Woodward). However, non-violent protests are very effective while the level of damage is significantly lower. Unlike violent activism characterized by revenge, self-interest, and self-defense, nonviolence aims to bring fairness to how people are treated. Nonviolence ensures that oppressive policies and regimes are abolished to ensure equal treatment. Personally, racism is a social conflict that I vividly denounce in a civilized society. However, because of its manifestation in our society, I have played an active role in nonviolent activism against racism. Using the power given to people, a protest has the power to change oppressive policies. This is evident from the 2015 University of Missouri case (Hartocollis). When black students united to demand justice through nonviolent protest, the school administration changed and the vice was strongly condemned across the country. Likewise, I believe that taking part in a nonviolent protest against racism is an important step towards eliminating the vice from society. Some of the nonviolent anti-racism practices I have adopted include wearing T-shirts with symbols condemning racism in public. In this way, I believe that many people become aware of the effects of racism and begin a process of transformation. Another form of nonviolent protest I have engaged in is boycotting products sold by racist vendors or institutions. While there may be a few people with common interests like mine, I believe this could escalate into a huge one.
